me and the old man have been marathoning Hey Arnold lately. we have this thing where we’ll pick a show and just start at episode one and cruise all the way through at our leisure.
i used to like Arnold as a kid but holy shit, it’s so much better as an adult. it’s got a level of characterization…
it really is just great. i caught an episode not too long ago, the first i’d watched in almost a decade, and it was the one that talked about arnold’s parents, and
i was kind of an emotional wreck afterward
like, it didn’t walk the fine line between heartwrenching and goofy — it fucking JUGGLED those two things expertly
it’s really weird how well constructed that show could be at its best, and it’s aged surprisingly well
it makes me mad, because i used to be ambivalent toward the show, and now that i’ve gone back and rewatched episodes, i wanna slap my younger self for being so blind and tasteless

80s anime hair is way better than trite undercuts and alternative dreads on your characters so they look super unique and original oops did i just say that
The house cooled down, so I barreled forth.
Went with a CMYK look, which ended up making Marguerite look a little Interstella 5555, but considering how showy she was in the original drawing? Yeah, let’s go with that.
Made a VHS and Vanilla version, but since I can’t decide between the two, I’m passing on the savings to you.

Probably because Emilee’s one of those people who I pay close attention to due to her really awesome lines and form, so whenever I draw her things I try to put that same focus into my work

At the very least, Emilee as a derby girl needs to happen in drawn format no matter what, so
TRUE FACTS: i want to be a roller derby girl really bad. i think i’d be good at it. i have strong legs and i’m six feet tall and wide. i think i’d name myself after Lizzie Borden or something.
but i’m not a good skater. don’t even know how to go backwards. and so.
FUN FACT: good derby groups will actually take you through all the steps, so if you are willing to learn, they’ll teach you how to skate
i’m not even joking, that’s literally part of the whole experience, they will take you through everything if you’re really serious about it
derby teams are really serious about community and cameraderie due to how much you have to rely on each other, and they’ll know who needs to be cut before anyone gets too seriously injured due to incompetence just so no one gets in over their heads

cuz i got an idea for a sapphixation one but i think only one or two of the team’ll actually be quote-unquote “featured” and all the rest’ll be basically anarchists on quads, punching people and spraypainting walls and yelling not nice words at the establishment and probably also getting high
i’ll figure out some designs this week in between comics

so fun fact, larke’s got a bunch of the anime on a hard drive and has been looking for the time to sit and watch it (but she’s at SCAD so that’s shot)
so after all the manga is released (and since the new anime has been potentially confirmed as delayed and there won’t be a few more volumes to wait for when it airs) i’ll probably marathon that, too
